I was first introduced to photography by my father. My father had a Canon SLR film camera. He was a handyman with a love for photography, but never had time for it. In high-school I took 4 years of photography. My father had bought me my first Canon camera, but when I started college I decided to focus on graphic design. Within a year I landed a job as a graphic designer/videographer with a litigation support firm in downtown Miami.
After a couple of years working with video and graphics I needed a change that would allow me to re-enter my path in photography. I got hired at an Italian lingerie company. I worked in their marketing department, retouching photos and designing graphics. I was there for about 3 years when they gave me the opportunity to become their in-house photographer. Immediately, I got to work with agency models and many professionals in the industry. This was an amazing time.
Everything was going phenomenal when I realized I was missing something. At this point I felt the need to branch out and go into business for myself. It wasn't easy, but I decided to take a financial risk and quit my day job.
Soon after I was introduced to a local wedding photographer. Some wedding photographers do get a bad wrap for taking tacky pics but this guy was the complete opposite. After my first shoot with him, he told me everything that was wrong with my work and said if I didn't elevate my work, I would not continue working for him. This pushed me to practice harder and research all aspects of my craft. Shortly after, he brought me in as his 2nd shooter.
In 2016, I took all the techniques I learned with weddings and my experience in the lingerie fashion industry to create my own look. I was definitely late in the world of instagram, but I decided to open up my first ig account @raulshoots.
